C5 Alliance has awarded their fourth bursary to Ladies College student, Katie Marquand.

Miss Marquand, 18, will be attending Bristol University in September to study a Masters of Engineering in Computer Science following her A-level exam results announced today. Katie achieved excellent results, with two A’s in Mathematics and Chemistry and an A* in Further Mathematics.

C5 Alliance is committed to encouraging and investing in young people who have an interest in pursuing a career in the technology sector, offering a no-strings-attached bursary which comprises a financial grant and the opportunity to undertake summer work with the company.

Miss Marquand first became interested in Computer Science when Ladies College launched their Coding Club. Following her involvement, she entered the Student Robotics international competition run by the University of Southampton, where her team placed second overall and won The Rookie Award, the prize that recognises the best performance in a new team. The challenge for the contestants changes annually, and this year’s competition required each team to build an autonomous robot that could flip over a box to display the team’s colour.

The university course that Miss Marquand is undertaking has an integrated Master’s degree, and so requires four years of studying, with Miss Marquand also hoping to complete a year studying abroad during her course and a PhD in Computer Science after completing her degree. She is particularly interested in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, following the Student Robotics contest.

During the summer holidays throughout her degree, Miss Marquand will spend time working with C5 Alliance to gain on-the-job experience to support the knowledge that she gains from her studies.

Matt Thornton, Director of Professional Services at C5 Alliance said that supporting emerging talent on-island is vital.

“Guernsey’s Technology Sector struggles when its university graduates do not return to the island, so it is our duty to attract these people back and show them that there is relevant, interesting and exciting work available here.”

“At C5 Alliance we strive to collaborate and build relationships with as many young people as possible. Our young people will be a vital part of Guernsey’s technology sector in the future and to ensure it remains vibrant and innovative, we need to offer routes into the industry – we do this both through our Bursary Scheme and the Graduate Academy that we launched in 2014.”

C5’s Graduate Academy allows candidates to train and develop on-island whether that’s in a technical capacity or in other aspects of the industry such as Business Analysis or Project Management.
