Carter Backer Winter (CBW) LLP, the top 50 firm of accountants, tax and business advisers based in the City of London, has entered into partnership with local accountancy firm Chandler Backer & Co, to form CBW Guernsey. The new joint venture will provide islanders with a range of services, including tax and transaction services.
Under the joint venture, CBW Guernsey will offer individuals and corporates meaningful business and financial insights as well as advise clients on business start-ups and sales strategies, business growth, investments, overseas expansion, tax planning and regulatory compliance.
John Dickinson, Partner at CBW, said: “We are extremely excited by this partnership. Our offshore portfolio has grown considerably over the past few years and we have been present, working on the island for over 12 months. Through this new venture we gain a foothold on the island, which will enable us to facilitate the needs of our clients as well as to strengthen Chandler Backer’s existing offering.”
As part of the joint venture, Chandler Backer has moved to new premises in St Peter Port and will operate as CBW Guernsey under the guidance of Martin Mahe, Director and former sole Partner at Chandler Backer. Martin qualified as a chartered accountant in 1979 and has spent the last 35 years supporting Guernsey’s finance industry with his extensive knowledge of most offshore jurisdictions and a network of worldwide specialist offshore contacts. Stuart Place, well known on the Island and former Chairman of the Guernsey Investment Managers and Stockbrokers Association, will also be joining the team.
John continued: “We are delighted that Martin and Stuart are joining us. Martin’s career has tracked the growth of Guernsey’s finance industry from its early days in the 1970s to its current position of maturity, whilst Stuart has over 25 years’ experience in the finance industry, particularly in the funds sector. They are both extremely experienced and ideally placed to work alongside CBW’s Partners Tom Adcock, Carl Bowles, Paul Smethurst and myself to deliver high calibre business and financial insights.”
John added: “With this tie-up, CBW has gone right back to its roots as the two firms have a shared connection: Tommy Backer, one of the founding partners of Chandler Backer, was also a co-founding partner of Carter Backer Winter (CBW), dating back to when the 20-partner London firm had only six members of staff., This shared history is an auspicious start for CBW Guernsey.”
