A competition to name Guernsey Electricity’s two new diesel engines is being launched by Guernsey Electricity.
Islanders are being invited to give new names to the diesel engines currently known as 2D and 3D. 2D is operational, and 3D, which was delivered late last year, is due to come into service in April.
The winner of the competition will be asked to switch on the £15m engine and receive a £100 voucher. The winner’s name along with the engine’s new name will be engraved on a plaque which will be unveiled when 3D is switched on.
‘We’re proud of our two newest energy-generating engines because they are marvels of engineering that form part of a considerable investment in infrastructure to help meet our commitment of providing a reliable and secure electricity supply to the island,’ said Sally-Ann David, asset management director for Guernsey Electricity.
‘2D and 3D are more environmentally-friendly, quieter and more efficient than are our older engines. They can also come online much quicker, meaning we have an effective back-up to our cable links. They are also the heaviest ever machines to be brought ashore in Guernsey, measuring 18m long by 4m wide and 6m high and each weighing 276 tons.’
Mrs David said he was looking forward to seeing what names are suggested by islanders.
‘To reflect their importance to Guernsey, we think it’s fitting to ask islanders to give 3D and 2D new names. We’re asking people to put forward two names that complement each other and give a reason as to why they should be chosen. Islanders can enter as many times as they like but they must suggest two names that are appropriate.’
Entries, which need to include a reason as to why the names have been suggested, can be sent to competition@electricity.gg or by post to Name the Engines, Electricity House, Northside, Vale, GY1 3AD. The closing date is 28th February and the winning names will be chosen by a panel, which will include representatives from the community and employees from Guernsey Electricity.
