Local students Imogen Conlan, Megan Graham and Fraser Casbolt, winners of last year’s Directors of Tomorrow initiative, are heading to London at the end of August with Guernsey’s IoD Chair, Linda Johnson.
As part of the initiative winners would usually attend the Institute of Director’s (IoD) London Convention at the Royal Albert Hall, however, due to the recent appointment of a new Director General the next UK Convention will not take place until 2018.
So instead The Ana Leaf Foundation, the initiative’s founder, has organised an alternative trip to London for the 2016-2017 winners.
The students will start their day with a trip to the IoD’s headquarters in Pall Mall. Here they will meet some of the organisation’s senior representatives who will showcase the iconic building and talk about the institute’s role within the business community.
The group will then head off to ITN’s news studio where they will catch the live lunchtime news broadcast by Guernsey’s IoD Convention moderator and ITN news journalist and newscaster, Alastair Stewart followed by a question and answer session with the company’s managing editor, Robin Elias.
The day will then be rounded off by a tour of the Houses of Parliament.
The three students – two from The Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre and one from Elizabeth College - were a group of nine students nominated by their schools to take part in the 2016/2017 Directors of Tomorrow initiative.
This involved attending the Guernsey IoD Convention last October and then submitting a blog reflecting on the debate’s theme: ‘To prosperity and beyond! Unlocking health, wealth and happiness for Guernsey.’
“I’m very much looking forward to our trip to London. The alternative arrangements that have been made available by the Ana Leaf Foundation are very exciting and I hope that the students will take away some great experiences,” said Mrs Johnson.
“Each of the students have University offers starting this autumn and, as our directors of tomorrow we wish them every success in their careers, whichever paths they decide to take.”
The trustees of the Ana Leaf Foundation are very grateful to Linda Johnson, Alastair Stewart and the team at the IoD London headquarters for giving up their valuable time for this visit.
“The aim of the Directors of Tomorrow initiative is to inspire young people to become the island’s future leaders and by offering experiences such as these, I hope this goes towards achieving our goals,” said Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation.
The 2017-2018 Directors of Tomorrow initiative will be launched in September where nine students interested in business, economics and current affairs will be invited to take part. The initiative is now in its seventh year and since its inception has supported over 50 young people, some of whom are now working in industry both home and abroad.
