AO HALL and Maitland Chambers are hosting the island’s first ever dedicated conference on digital currencies.

Following the success of its two earlier conferences on FinTech, AO Hall has collaborated with leading barristers Maitland Chambers, to organise a three-jurisdiction roadshow, over three days, called ‘Trusts and Cyber-Currencies’.

"The Channel Islands have an excellent reputation for being industry experts on trusts and trustees.  Some beneficiaries will be looking at the investment opportunities of cyber currencies but the law is only just catching up with this new form of investment. This roadshow will consider what they are, whether they are a suitable form of investment for a trustee, the pros and the cons, and the legal position if things go wrong," said AO Hall partner, Alison Ozanne.

It will be the first time the subject has been considered locally from the legal angle and will look at the enormous potential the island has to become a jurisdictional leader in crypto-currencies.

Maitland has secured keynote speaker and chambers member, Dr David Fox, a university lecturer in the Faculty of Law and a fellow of St John’s College in the University of Cambridge. He is also a trust expert with a particular expertise in property rights in money.  Advocate Ozanne will co-chair the event and Paul Buckle, group partner at AO Hall, will be speaking.

The conference will include a mock trial in which the speakers will argue a theoretical case before a mock tribunal. This moot will feature Sarah Brehaut, Gregory Tee and Michael Rogers, of AO Hall, and Adam Smith, Andrew Walker QC, James Clifford, John Dagnall, Oliver Phillips and Richard Fowler, of Maitland.  Delegates will be encouraged to participate by suggesting lines of argument.

The seminar is aimed at investment advisers and trustees as well as those with an interest in cyber-currencies and trust asset investment.  Delegates can sign up to this free seminar on one of three dates – 1 July in London, 2 July in Guernsey and 3 July in Jersey.
