FUTURE business leaders in Jersey are now being offered the opportunity to study a Masters in Business Administration.
The GTA University Centre is the only facility in the Channel Islands to be offering an MBA and will be holding information sessions in the island next week to explain the benefits of the programme.
‘The Channel Islands have an enviable reputation for being business centres of excellence and that is down to the insight, innovation and experience of managers and directors across every industry sector. To be an effective leader requires knowledge and understanding and an MBA is the ideal way to develop those assets,’ said GTA deputy chief executive Simon Le Tocq, who has himself completed the qualification.
‘The MBA course, which is run in partnership with the University of Southampton, has been very successful in Guernsey and while we have had some students from Jersey, we feel there could be a significant demand which is why we’re holding these sessions to allow interested business people to find out more information.’
The information sessions will be held at the Royal Yacht on Monday 19th May from 5pm – 7pm and the following day from noon until 3pm.
Georgina Jefferies-Shelton, head of marketing at Volaw Group (Jersey), is one islander who completed the course through the GTA University Centre.
‘Although I have a degree and marketing qualifications, I wanted to broaden my business knowledge and the MBA allowed me to do that as I leant a huge amount,’ she said.
‘I can now appreciate how the business as a whole flows whereas before various elements of the operational side of the business perhaps passed me by. The MBA gives a really rounded perspective of all aspects of business management. I notice now that people tend not to appreciate the need for different services and elements of the business, the leadership module has helped me to understand what motivates the members of my team and I have a lot more confidence in management and in different areas of the business as I have a better understanding of them now.’

Future business leaders in Jersey offered opportunity to study for MBA / 2
She said she hoped more people from Jersey enrolled.
‘It’s worth all the hard work. It was really interesting and I met some great people from very different working backgrounds. It’s definitely given me another level of knowledge on which to build my career.’
The course, which aims to give students a grounding in management techniques and skills, an understanding of strategic management and an insight into business issues through individual research, covers a wide range of modules including effective leadership, contemporary marketing, decision modelling and analysis, corporate finance and strategy.
‘It is a significant commitment but one which brings enormous benefit to younger managers who want to develop their expertise and become future leaders by standing out rather than blending in. The business world is becoming increasingly competitive, in all sectors, and companies need strong leaders to take them forward and continue being successful,’ said Mr Le Tocq.
Dr Edgar Meyer from the University of Southampton, which is one of Europe’s leading management schools, said the course integrated all aspects of management.
‘The MBA is a programme which is designed to build the skills and capacity of individuals who already have considerable works experience to enable them to reach new levels within their organisation,’ he said.
‘Individuals will be able to go back to their organisations and hopefully think differently about the way in which they work with people, they can bring in new ideas, they can challenge their own way of thinking and they may be able to challenge the way things are done.’
The two year course, which comprises of 14 lecture weekends a year and an international study week in Maastricht, costs £18,750 but payments terms are available through the GTA. Anyone wanting to find out more about the MBA can contact Chris Edwards on 746886 or email chris.edwards@gta.gg
