A team of students from Guernsey Grammar School has taken another step towards a place in the finals of a national public speaking competition, following a resounding victory at the weekend.
Kirsty Dempster, Cameron Oldfield and Tabitha Wherry took part in the District Heats of Youth Speaks, the public speaking competition organised by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI).
They presented their topic “Dinner with Ozymandias” in Hampshire on Saturday evening and were praised for the clarity of their argument, the energy of their performance and the way in which they handled questions from the floor. The team will now go through to the Regional Finals with an eye on a place in the National Final which is being held in Brentwood in Essex in May.
Simon Milsted of the Rotary Club of Guernsey said, ‘It was another impressive display by a Guernsey team in this competition. We have traditionally done well and that reflects very positively not only on our young people, but on the Island as a whole.’
Youth Speaks in Guernsey is supported by Mourant Ozannes, now celebrating ten years of partnership with the Rotary Club of Guernsey. Jessica Roland, Guernsey Managing Partner said, ‘We are very proud of this association and of our young Guernsey competitors. They are great ambassadors for their school and for the Island and we wish them every success in the next round.’
The RIBI Youth Speaks Competition attracts entries from all over the country, with teams taking part in local heats, District Heats, Regional Finals and the National Final.
