The GTA University Centre will host a series of live streaming events aimed at delivering high quality thought leadership presentations to a local audience.
Following the success of a pilot event in collaboration with Plymouth University in November last year, the GTA will host a series of high quality lunchtime lectures streamed live from the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA).
‘The GTA is embracing the changes in how we learn and train and it’s important that what we offer to the island is relevant and meets the needs of the business community. The aim of the live streaming events is to deliver high quality education and thought provoking lectures and then enhance them with an informal discussion within the local context,’ said deputy chief executive Simon Le Tocq.
‘We have identified several organisations and academic institutions that can provide us with a wide range of interesting lectures and we have also invested in new equipment to ensure that we can deliver the events to the highest possible standard.’
The RSA broadcasts one hour lectures on Thursday lunchtimes and the GTA will be live streaming some of these at its training centre at St Peter Port House in Sausmarez Street. The first lecture ‘Does the News Do Us Any Good?’ will be presented by writer, philosopher, television presenter and entrepreneur Alain De Botton and will be followed by a 30 minute local discussion led by Guernsey Press business editor, James Falla. Attendance for each RSA lecture is free and an optional sandwich lunch will be available for £10 per head.
‘The GTA believes it is important for people’s personal development to take time out, learn something new and hear a different perspective from experts inside and outside of the island. That can be difficult to do in today’s time pressured world but our hope is that by providing the opportunity, people will embrace the idea of lunchtime learning,’ said Mr Le Tocq.
Future topics which will be streamed live from the RSA will include; ‘The Political Origins of the Banking Crises’ on 27 February and ‘The Truth about Social Mobility’ on 6 March. Founded in a coffee shop in Covent Garden in 1754, the RSA is an enlightenment organisation committed to finding innovative practical solutions to today’s social challenges. Through its ideas, research and 27,000-strong Fellowship, it seeks to understand and enhance human capability so we can close the gap between today’s reality and people’s hopes for a better world.
