A Chinese law student has gained a better understanding of Guernsey’s offering as an international finance centre after spending a month in the island working for a local law firm.
Franca Huang joined Ogier for a one-month internship at the beginning of January as part of an exchange programme initiated between Guernsey Finance, law firm Duan & Duan in Hong Kong and the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL).
Ogier partner Frances Watson said: “Ogier is delighted to support this Guernsey Finance initiative in providing an opportunity for ECUPL students to better understand the work undertaken here, and how this can be applied in their future law careers in China.
“We have had a full programme for Franca, who has worked with Guernsey lawyers across our various practice areas to better understand the work of this busy office.”
It is hoped that Ms Huang’s visit will be the first of an on-going programme between Guernsey law firms and ECUPL students. Guernsey Finance Asia Representative Wendy Weng played a key role alongside Steven Wang of Duan & Duan to launch the initiative, while the Commercial Bar Association in Guernsey also provided its support.
Kate Clouston, Director of International Business Development at Guernsey Finance, said: “We are delighted that this partnership has started off on such a positive note. Our relationship with the East China University of Political Science and Law is an important component of the holistic approach we are taking to develop closer ties with China, not only by increasing business links but also by fostering a shared cultural understanding. We are grateful to Franca for taking part and look forward to welcoming new students in due course.”
Ms Huang, who has just celebrated her 23rd birthday in Guernsey, said: “Since I’ve been at Ogier I’ve gained a greater understanding of the activity of a Guernsey law firm and the variety of work undertaken by Guernsey based lawyers.”
Although aware of its geographical location, Ms Huang had limited knowledge of Guernsey before she arrived. She said she had enjoyed her time in the Island and with the Ogier team, adding that she found Guernsey very peaceful.
“People in the Island and at Ogier are very friendly,” she said.
