A competition to name Guernsey Electricity’s two new diesel engines has so far attracted more than 50 entries.

The company decided to invite islanders to suggest new names for the diesel engines, which are currently known as 2D and 3D, ahead of the second of the engines being switched on in April.

‘There have been some excellent suggestions and it’s going to be a difficult decision to decide the two names which are most fitting. Names associated with Guernsey have been popular but we have also seen entries inspired by history and others associated with the process of generating electricity,’ said Sally-Ann David, asset management director for Guernsey Electricity.

‘There were lots of other suggestions on Facebook – some serious and some not – but only entries which have been emailed or posted to us will be entered into the competition.’

The winner of the competition will be asked to switch on the £15m engine and receive a £100 voucher. The winner’s name along with the engines new names will be engraved on a plaque which will be unveiled when 3D is switched on.

Entries, which must be for two names which complement each other and include a reason as to why the names have been suggested, can be sent to competition@electricity.gg. The closing date is 28th February and the winning names will be chosen by a panel, which will include representatives from the community and employees from Guernsey Electricity.
