Rugby in the Channel Islands has received a boost from Investec Private Banking. The bank has agreed to give the rebranded Channel Islands Rugby League £2,500 a year for the next three years.

‘This is a fantastic development for rugby in the Channel Islands and we are extremely grateful to Investec Private Banking for sponsoring the league and helping to secure it for the next three years,’ said Kevin Lemasney, chair of the Jersey Rugby Association.

"This league gives teams other than the firsts from Guernsey and Jersey Rugby Clubs the chance to play competitively during the season and to finish the season with an inter insular game. The money from Investec will help enormously with travel costs and other expenses."

Martin Belcher, chair of Guernsey Rugby Football Association, added: "It is fantastic news that Investec is coming on board to sponsor the league. We are always trying to raise the profile of the inter insular competition and this will help enormously in that respect."

The teams that qualify for the league from Guernsey are: Guernsey 2nds and St Jacques; from Jersey the sides taking part are: defending champions Les Quennevais, Jersey Buccaneers, Beeches, Optimus United Banks, and Panthers.

Kevin Allen, director of Investec Private Banking, said: "Investec has a long history of involvement with the game of rugby and we are delighted to support the development of the sport in Guernsey & Jersey through our sponsorship of the Channel Islands Rugby League. The key qualities in the game of teamwork, innovative play, agility and determination are at the heart of Investec's culture and by supporting the League we hope to help create an enduring legacy for rugby in the local community."

The season culminates with an inter-insular, which will this year be held at Foote’s Lane in Guernsey on 14 March.

Each island side has a mix of players from their island’s participating teams and players wear their own club socks with an island jersey. Islanders are welcome to go along to watch.
