Islands Insurance has extended its sponsorship of one of the Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service’s key fire safety and prevention initiatives for the next two years.
The enhanced deal will enable the Fire Service to increase the number of home fire safety visits it carries out and will fund the provision of free Aico smoke detectors to the public.
Last year, the Fire Service carried out 224 home fire safety visits, but one of its service priorities is to focus on the fire safety needs of the most at-risk and vulnerable members of the community.
On each visit they will install at least two smoke detectors and give advice on safety in the home as well as checking for potential problems that may be caused by domestic appliances or faulty wiring.
Steve Wilkes (pictured left), Fire Safety Manager at Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service, said that properly installed and working smoke alarms had been proven to drastically reduce the risk of death or injury by giving early warning of fire, as well as limiting the potential damage caused to homes and property.
“We are keen to continue installing as many free smoke alarms as we can and the support of Islands Insurance, who have tripled their existing sponsorship for the next two years, is central to us being able to do this,” he added.
Karl Richards, Commercial Business Manager at Islands, said they were committed to making Guernsey a safer island and were proud to be supporting such an important community safety initiative, which has seen thousands of smoke detectors installed across the Bailiwick since it was first introduced.
“Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service already do a great job in promoting fire safety awareness and prevention and, with help from Islands, they’ll be able to assist even more people, and ensure islanders are kept safe at home, and at work,” said Mr Richards.
