ActionAid Guernsey is fundraising to rebuild a school that was damaged in the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal. Over 7,500 schools, which is 90% of Nepal’s schools were affected by the earthquakes, which left over one million children without access to a safe place to learn.

ActionAid needs to raise approximately £100,000 to fund the project, and recruit 20 volunteers to travel to Nepal in October/November to undertake the work. They are working with ActionAid Nepal to use local expertise to help the worst affected area of the country. The trip will be entirely self-funded by individuals wishing to participate, so that all fundraising efforts can go directly to the project.

While in Nepal, the group will have the opportunity to trek to Everest Base Camp, an exciting endurance challenge, to raise additional funds for the project. The trek passes through the homelands of the Sherpa people, past Buddhist monasteries and beautiful scenery of the world’s highest mountains.

The trip will give participants the opportunity to see first-hand how fundraising in the Channel Islands is changing the lives of those living in poverty. No previous building experience is necessary, just enthusiasm, motivation and a good level of fitness.

ActionAid Guernsey Chair, Natalie Tucker, said “We’re really excited that volunteers will have the opportunity to work on a project that we’re fundraising for in the Channel Islands. We have now recruited around half of the volunteers needed for the trip, but still need more people to sign up to help with the rebuild of the school, so it would be great if some Jersey volunteers could join the team heading to Nepal this Autumn”.

ActionAid is holding a drop-in information session at the Lazyjack Lounge at the Royal Yacht Hotel on Saturday 15th April, for anyone who would like to know more about the trip. People can also register their interest by emailing actionaidguernsey@gmail.com or looking on ActionAid’s website at: http://actionaid.org.uk/GuernseyNepalTrip
