Local sportsmen and women raised £250 for Male Uprising Guernsey and £500 for MS Society Guernsey at the latest try-a-tri event.
The latest part of Get Fit Guernsey’s series, which encourages people to try different sporting activities, was sponsored by Trust Corporation International and consisted of two separate events this weekend – one for men and one for women.
Both events were held at Pembroke and consisted of a 400m swim, a 10km bike ride and a 2.5km run. The women’s event attracted 59 competitors and the men’s event saw 32 people take part.
Get Fit Guernsey designed the series to attract people of all abilities to take on physical challenges and build confidence as well as fitness levels.
This was the first time that separate triathlons had been held for men and women competitors.
Maddy Diligent, owner of Get Fit Guernsey, said: “Hosting the two separate events allows us to help two different charities and both of these are worthy local causes.
“The attendance at both events has been fantastic and we’re really pleased that more islanders than ever are keen to take on new sporting challenges.”
Mark Coffell, director at Trust Corporation International, took part in the event and said: “This was my first triathlon and I really enjoyed it. It’s a challenge to take part in all three disciplines in one event but it’s also part of the fun.
“Trust Corporation’s support for this amazing series came about due to a number of staff who took part last year and experienced a well-organised and fun series of events which has something for everyone throughout the year.”
Katie Wallen, senior manager at Trust Corporation International, was taking part in her second triathlon and said: “The Get Fit Guernsey events are great to be a part of because they encourage you to be healthy and build up your fitness in a friendly and supportive environment.
“The fact that Trust Corporation supports the events is an extra bonus for me and I’ve been encouraging more and more of my colleagues to get involved and raise some money for charity.”
