The Association of Guernsey Charities has its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 15 April and has announced that Martyn Lewis, CBE, is visiting Guernsey to attend.

Martyn is widely known around the UK through his long career as a broadcaster and journalist, and worked for both BBC and ITV news. For more than thirty years he has also worked with a variety of charitable organisations and is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

His considerable experience gives Martyn an exceptional appreciation and understanding of the needs of charities, as well as an awareness of the difficulties faced by some organisations. Martyn also campaigns regularly for more coverage of the achievements of the voluntary sector in the national media, and for greater focus on positive news stories.

Martyn will be delivering a speech to local charities at the AGC meeting. He says: “There is no finer form of democracy in action than people on the ground, close to communities, identifying grassroots issues in society and getting together with friends and neighbours to tackle them day by day, week by week. Guernsey has a great track record in delivering that – so I am really looking forward to meeting everyone involved at the agm.”

The agm is only open to organisations that are members of the Association of Guernsey Charities, and those wishing to attend have been asked to pre-register.
Malcolm Woodhams, AGC Vice-Chairman, said “We are delighted that Martyn has agreed to join us for our agm and it will be interesting to hear his insight into the charitable and voluntary sector. Few people have had his degree of experience with so many leading organisations in the UK.”

The Association of Guernsey Charities is grateful to Aurigny and the Duke of Richmond Hotel for their generous help and support with the arrangements for Martyn’s visit.

Due to the popularity, additional places have been made available for AGC members wishing to attend the AGM. Details about registering for a place can be found on the AGC website – www.charity.org.gg
