Waitrose in Guernsey is calling on local musical organisations to bid for a grant of up to £3,000 to support their project as part of the supermarket’s annual Music Matters scheme.

Between February and March, local groups can apply for funding through their local Waitrose branch, for one off donations that recognise outstanding contributions to the musical life of the local community.

Choirs, music groups, orchestras, and bands of any style of music are all eligible, including anyone looking to start a musical group of benefit to the local community. The grants are also available to schools teaching music to young children, as well as projects and events that are designed to promote music, or where music is mixed with other activities, such as dance and musical theatre.

Each store nominates suitable recipients before the final selection is made at Waitrose head office. Application forms are available to pick up at the Waitrose welcome desks in both branches. The winner will receive the sum requested between £500 and £3,000 to put towards new musical instruments, equipment or to help fund an upcoming concert or production.

The scheme aims to support local talent and acknowledge an outstanding contribution made to a community through music.

Last year, the Waitrose Admiral Park branch donated £500 through the scheme to local organisation the School of Popular Music, a hub for music enthusiasts of all ages and abilities, providing assistance and knowledge to the students with private tuition for a number of different instruments and a Saturday session where all the students can meet and form bands and socialise.

They put the funding towards the recording of a song with local charity Autism Guernsey that was on sale last Christmas.
