Channel Island equality charity Liberate are delighted to announce their new chair Markis Allen. Markis is a prominent member of the LGBTQ community in Guernsey and is known to many by his Drag Queen alter ego Magenta. He has a long history of campaigning for LGBT and equality issues which stems back to the 90’s in London working with leading gay activist Peter Tatchell in the first gay rights campaign group OUTRAGE. His most recent charity works see him (and her) working for the last few years with no only with Liberate but the Guernsey Round Table and Clic Sargent to name but a few.
Markis Allen, new Chair of Liberate (Guernsey) said ‘I feel very privileged to be taking on the role of Chair for Liberate. After the success of last year’s first Pride event in Guernsey, and same sex marriage legislation coming into law two months ago you might think Liberate’s work is done. However, they are the first of many stepping stones to creating a truly equal way of life for everybody across the islands. There is still a lot to do as far as creating awareness though education and changing attitudes, ultimately with the aim to creating acceptance and equality for everyone. I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty and expecting a busy time ahead.”
Outgoing Chair of Liberate (Guernsey) Pippa McCathie, added: “.”
The change of board members was finalised at Liberate’s open AGM in May, which saw Pippa McCathie as Chair, and Niall McCathie as Treasurer both step down. Both will still be involved in the charity taking a step back from day to day operations into the roles of Trustees. Liberate also welcomes new Trustees to the board Charles Parkinson and Hugo Forrester, along with Hollie Johnson-Tart who takes up the role of Treasurer. Ellie Jones, Vice Chair of Liberate expressed ‘heartfelt thanks on behalf of Liberate to Pippa and Niall, who have been instrumental in keeping us all on the ‘straight’ and narrow and steering us in the right direction for the last year or two.’
