A specialist in tertiary education has joined the GTA University Centre to focus on the courses it offers the legal and financial services industries.
Paula Williams moved to the island to be closer to her husband’s family after being affected by the Christchurch earthquakes. She has spent the last 18 months working in the finance industry but is now returning to education bringing with her ten years’ experience in both the education sector and as a learning and development professional in the private sector.
"Tertiary training is my area of expertise and I was very keen to return to that and the GTA has an excellent reputation," said Mrs Williams. "I wanted to work with people passionate about developing people and who are committed to supporting the development of industry skills. When I met the team at the GTA, it felt like a great match."
Mrs Williams, believes her MBA in strategic management, corporate governance and tertiary education qualifications would be beneficial in her new role.
"The depth of my experience, gives me a broader understanding of how to identify and deliver to the needs of industry. My MBA was applied and my experience working as a business consultant means I have practical experience evaluating business requirements within a wide range of settings to identify skills gaps and support the development of required skills."
Mrs Williams, her husband Michael and their two sons have adjusted to Guernsey life. Her children attend Vauvert Primary School and are actively involved in rugby, football, golf, tennis cubs and scouts; with her youngest son also singing in the Guernsey boys’ choir. Mrs Williams is also involved in the Guernsey 1st Sea Scouts, helping young people experience and learn new and exciting skills.
In her new role, she will identify and implement training programmes which meet the needs of the Guernsey economy, with a particular focus on the financial services sector.
Simon Le Tocq, deputy chief executive of the GTA University Centre, said having someone of Mrs Williams’ calibre would enhance the programmes they could offer.
"It is rare to find someone with such relevant tertiary education experience who has also spent time working in finance and therefore has real-life experience of what the industry needs. Paula will join our team of highly experienced programmes managers who are committed to delivering a range of courses which meet the growing needs of Guernsey business," he said.
