Guernsey’s Board Apprentice scheme which was launched in March this year has already placed nine apprentices with boards – more than any other place outside of the UK.
The scheme, which is administrated by the GTA University Centre as executive ambassador, aims to match aspiring board members to boards across all sectors. Apprentices will gain invaluable boardroom experience during a 12-month term and boards will benefit from having a new member who can bring a fresh perspective and specialist expertise that will enrich the business.
"Guernsey is the best performing country outside the UK. It has been very effective in embracing the concept and educating its local talent. Guernsey is lucky to have such dedicated people willing to be part of widening the pool of available NEDs for the better of the island," said Charlotte Valeur, the founder of Board Apprentice.
At an event organised to encourage companies to sign up and take on an apprentice, Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, was announced as Guernsey’s Ambassador for Board Apprentice.
"This scheme is a sensible and practical way to increase the pipeline for NEDs. Board members can’t learn the skills they require from textbooks alone, it is only through practical experience that they can develop the skills and acquire the knowledge necessary to be an effective board member. This scheme offers a great opportunity for Guernsey to grow its own talent. This is a brilliant scheme for the island," she said.
Simon Le Tocq, chief executive of the GTA University Centre, said: ‘We have 12 apprentices waiting for placements so we need boards to step up and join the scheme. The GTA already runs the well established Institute of Directors Company Direction programme and the Director Development series, but Board Apprentice fills the gap for developing the skills necessary for performing at board level through experiential learning.’
