THE reasons why banking systems are unstable in some countries and not in others will be discussed at the next GTA University Centre live streaming event.
The GTA has linked up with the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) to host a series of high quality lunchtime lectures.
On Thursday, the lecture, which is sponsored by Saffery Champness and free to attend, will see Charles W. Calomiris, professor of financial institutions at Columbia Business School examine the extent to which politics influences a country's banking system. His belief is that banking crises are not accidents due to unforeseen circumstances but rather are the result of complex bargains made between politicians, bankers and other interest groups.
The live stream lecture will be held at St James 1.00 – 2.00pm and will be followed by a local discussion led by Saffery Champness Paul Garrard, Mark Despres and Ajay Wiltshire.
'This will be a fascinating look at the real reasons why countries experience a banking crisis and will be of interest to anyone working within the financial services industry. To have the opportunity to hear from someone as well-respected as Professor Calomiris about his global views and then follow it with a discussion on the local context will be extremely insightful,' said GTA programmes manager Chris Edwards.
