Guernsey Electricity has appointed a new risk, quality and compliance manager.

Rob Winter will manage the company’s risk register, and look at how processes can be improved to better manage risks and provide training to staff.

‘Like all companies, it is important to ensure Guernsey Electricity is aware of all the potential risks facing the business and how to mitigate those. Rob’s appointment will help us do that, which ultimately benefits our customers and the island,’ said Guernsey Electricity’s chief executive, Alan Bates.

‘Rob will ensure the register is up-to-date and that action is being taken to reduce risks. He will also be looking at how the company can improve risk management and compliance policies and processes, and provide training to staff to get them more involved in risk management activities.’

Mr Winter, 38, said it’s good to work for a company so clearly focused on serving the community. He is also looking forward to working with Guernsey Electricity’s teams and management, to get a better understanding of the potential risks facing the business.

‘Guernsey Electricity has to manage a complex set of operational processes to ensure we deliver a reliable service to our customers. We also have several high value projects under way, such as the new generator and the Guernsey to France cable link. In addition to this, global events are less predictable and more complex today than ever before and this lack of certainty also impacts our business activities and projects,’ said Mr Winter.

Risk management is about managing all of these changing events and improving our ability to predict and mitigate a risk, rather than just reacting after the event. It also makes us more cost effective as a business and enhances the reliability of our service to our customers.’

Mr Winter is currently in training for an Ironman 70.3 triathlon in September in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, in Weymouth, will see him attempt a 2km sea swim, 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon.
