A Guernsey-based charity that raises awareness of the impact and extent of domestic abuse, and supports anyone experiencing domestic abuse in Guernsey, has received a donation of £44,965 from the Lloyds Banks Foundation.

Safer provides vital refuge services for women and children in Guernsey and has an annual fundraising target of £60,000 to cover around 50% of the refuge’s running costs. The grant from the Foundation has boosted this fundraising to give further opportunities to local women and their children, to help them live an independent life that is free from the fear of violence and coercive control.

Chair of the Board of Directors of Safer, Dr Maggie Costen, said: “Safer was delighted to be awarded the grant from the Lloyds Bank Foundation this year in relation to the management costs at the Guernsey Women’s Refuge. The money will enable us to make positive changes to the lives of individuals affected by domestic violence by putting in place supervision of staff, in addition to tailored support packages for those experiencing abuse to cover areas such as recognising the signs of abuse, safety planning and support with parenting children affected by violence and abuse. Women across the Bailiwick will really benefit from this grant, knowing that there continues to be a safe space for them to stay, and advice and support if they need it.  Without donations like this we would struggle to maintain high quality, evidence-based services.”

Executive Director of Lloyds Bank Foundation, John Hutchins, said: “The valuable services that Safer provides to vulnerable members of our community was very obvious and we are pleased to be able to support them in continuing in their important work.”

The Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands is one of the largest sources of charitable funding in the islands, dispensing almost £1 million a year in the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey. Its mission is to support and work in partnership with charitable organisations that help people, especially those who are disadvantaged or disabled, to play a fuller role in communities throughout the Channel Islands.

Since 1986, donations amounting to more than £14 million have been made across the Channel Islands.

The Chairman of the Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands is John Boothman and the Deputy Chairman is Guernsey Jurat Dr John Ferguson.
