The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is supporting healthy eating for children by donating fruit to this year’s Playscheme organised by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney.

The six-week scheme for children, aged between five and eleven, offers educational and fun activities including arts and crafts, music, drama, games, cookery, sports and day trips to local places of interest. The high quality service, held at the Les Ozouets Campus Youth Centre, takes referrals from Health & Social Care and local charities, such as Home-Start, with the cost of attending kept to a minimum to help families on a tight budget.

This summer’s scheme, which is fully subscribed, has the theme of a journey around the world, with children learning about different countries – including having the opportunity to sample different fruit that they might not usually eat.

‘This is a wonderful scheme, organised by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, which the children enjoy and helps families during the summer holidays,’ said Tanya Dorrity, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society’s community officer.

‘The Society is delighted to support the Playscheme again this year, by providing fruit to encourage healthy eating by the children and helping take them on a journey across the world.’

Kerstin Neason, CEO of the Youth Commission, said Playscheme is a very popular service that teaches primary-aged children new skills while having lots of fun during school holidays.

‘We are extremely grateful to The Channel Islands Co-operative Society for providing vouchers so the children who attend Playscheme can have fresh fruit every day,’ she said.

‘It is so important that young people learn about the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. As our theme is around the world, it’s fantastic that they’ll have the opportunity to try a variety of fruit which they might not normally come across.’
