Staff at GROW Ltd can now compost materials they previously took to the tip thanks to a donation from the Sure Community Foundation.
A £2,500 donation means that GROW – Guernsey’s Rural Occupational Workshop – has been able to buy a chipper/ shredder machine as well as other gardening tools.
GROW manager, Eddie Higgins, thanked the foundation for its generous donation, which comes during the charity’s 30th anniversary year.
"Donations of any size are always welcomed by the GROW team – there is always the scope for large or small projects to make the working environment more beneficial for our service users. Plus, like many charities, the overheads of running a premise and associated equipment are extensive – even more so in a horticultural business/ occupational workshop," said Mr Higgins.
"The purchase of the chipper/shredder machine means we can compost material we would normally have to take to the States tip, enabling us to save money on charges and also build up our own compost material for re-sale.

Karen Jagger of the Sure Community Foundation, added: "This is exactly the type of project the Sure Community Foundation likes to support as there are multiple benefits to the beneficiary. Not only do they avoid the need to cover the initial outlay for the machine and tools, but the machine itself also reduces their running costs and saves them having to go to the tip with their green waste."
