LONG-STANDING plans for a community swimming pool in Alderney are closer to becoming a reality after the Sure Community Foundation donated £5,000 to the appeal.

More than £535,000 has already been raised for the project, which will see a pool and gym constructed at St Anne’s School.

The donation will cover the cost of lockers, a disabled hoist, signs and chairs, including one for the lifeguard.

‘The dream of having a pool and gym in Alderney has been in the pipeline for a long time. It’s something that the whole community is behind and will be a real boost for the island,’ said project organiser Rod Paris.

‘Sure’s support has been fantastic. Not only have they become sponsors of The Sure Coast Race, as it will now be known, but they have now bought much needed equipment for the pool. Without support like theirs this whole project might never have got off the ground.’

Charlotte Dunsterville, of the Sure Community Foundation, said all of the islands were important to the company. She added that the level of community support for the project was impressive.

‘Islanders have put a huge effort into getting this project off the ground and they fully deserve to have a lovely new swimming pool and well-equipped gym. Sure didn’t hesitate to get involved with this project as community involvement is at the heart of what we do,’ she said.
