A £1600 donation from the Sure Community Foundation and Sure employees will allow local charity Headway to continue to run art workshops and family sessions for islanders living with brain injuries.
The donation will be used to purchase art materials, white boards and specific items for the family group sessions which give carers the opportunity to socialise and discuss the challenges of caring for someone with a brain injury.
The art workshops help service users to learn new skills as well as relearn cognitive skills that have been lost. The sessions focus on improving memory and confidence, using art to demonstrate the journey from suffering a serious brain injury to life back in the community.
Karen Jagger of the Sure Community Foundation said: “Headway is an important charity in Guernsey and one the Community Foundation and Sure employees were very keen to support.
“Sure’s employees were actively involved in raising the funds for this donation with £750 of the total amount being raised through the staff tuck shop and dress down Fridays.
“The art workshops and the family group sessions are both significant aspects of the support Headway offers islanders and their families who are living with the long-term effects of a brain injury so we’re pleased that this donation will be used to provide supplies for these.”
Executive director of Headway Guernsey, Philippa Stahelin, said: “These sessions bring people together in a supportive and positive environment. Art is particularly important as it allows our service users to get a greater insight into their disabilities in a creative way, through painting or drawing.
“The Sure Community Foundation has been a wonderful supporter of Headway over the years and their recent donation will make a huge difference to the islanders we support.”
