Local students with a desire to work on digital projects gained vital experience with Sure through the Discover Digital Summer Internship scheme last week.
The scheme, set up by Startup Guernsey and the Digital Greenhouse, provides students who are passionate about digital technology with practical experience in local companies and highlights the variety of exciting and challenging careers in the sector.
Five post-16 students spent a week at Sure between 17–21 July to practise working in the digital sector.
The students helped to support initiatives developed in Sure’s in-house ideas incubator, Project-I, by conducting data analytic studies and exploring macro-economics.
The paid internship opportunity runs for five weeks throughout the summer and seven companies in various sectors are involved in the scheme.
Sure’s human resources director, Lucienne De La Mare, said: “It is important for local companies to support schemes such as this to help fill the technical skills gap in the island and inspire young people.
“Sure is committed to providing opportunities for students to develop and gain an understanding of the digital sector and is pleased to have been able to offer a week’s experience with this scheme.”
Sure employees recently mentored participants of the Channel Island Student Business Challenge, supporting young entrepreneurs, and the company runs the Sure Academy which offers local students a channel into the workplace.
The Sure Academy is a two-year programme and participants of the Discover Digital Summer Internship scheme will be encouraged to sign up for the 2018 programme.
