Waitrose in Guernsey will be marking Liberation Day by closing both its branches on Saturday 9 May.
Waitrose operates an employee ownership business model, Partners (as all staff are known) therefore have a say in the running of the business and are actively involved in decision making such as this.
Partners at Admiral Park and Rohais based stores have made the decision to close in order to respect the 70th anniversary of the island’s liberation from World War II.
Ian Burdekin, branch manager, Admiral Park, said: "Liberation Day is a hugely important day for the island and we felt it was the right decision in order to pay our respects. We took into consideration the views of the island and the importance of the day being respected.
“Partner opinion is a key factor in our decision making as a business and we believe it is absolutely right that we respect the significance of the day and engage with the community to ensure the celebrations are enjoyed fully by all of our customers and Partners.”
Waitrose Partners will play an active role in the events planned for the 9 May, volunteering throughout the town and assisting with the large vehicle cavalcade and parade. The recent announcement of the visit of HRH The Countess of Wessex will make the day even more special for many islanders.
Both branches will be working with the Liberation Day organisers to see how Waitrose can further support their efforts.
Admiral Park and Rohais will trade until 10 pm on Friday 8 May to allow customers to fully prepare for their celebrations on Liberation day – whether they are entertaining family and friends or hosting traditional parties. Events will also take place in store in the days leading up the celebrations.
