Following huge interest from local schools in the ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme Waitrose will for the first time be delivering packs to school children in Alderney, Sark and Herm later this month.
Aimed at encouraging 7-11 year olds across the UK and Channel Islands to grow their own produce which they can then sell to Waitrose customers the ‘Grow and Sell’ scheme has already given out 37 kits to Guernsey schools.
The kit, which has been specially designed by Waitrose to get school vegetable patches up and running, includes seeds, equipment and step-by-step growing instructions and aims to promote healthy eating and increase pupils understanding of where their food comes from.
Aurigny has kindly provided the flights for Kelly Divall, community matters co-ordinator at Waitrose Rohais, free of charge for her to travel to Alderney to deliver the kit to St Annes School. Waitrose will also be taking kits to the Herm and Sark Schools.
Mrs Divall said: “We are really pleased that the smaller Bailiwick schools have been very enthusiastic about this project and most have already set up their vegetable patches. Our thanks go to Aurigny Air Services, who have provided us with flights to get the kits to Alderney, and Floral Guernsey, who will be following the progress of the kits in each school.
“The scheme began in 2013 and has encouraged local schools to build vegetable patches, and played an important role in helping children understand the journey from field to plate. Growing at school encourages children to eat well and have a better understanding of what they are eating.”

An app has also been developed with handy tips to help the students and is available from the Google and Apple app stores.
