Young islanders have new instruments following a £3,000 donation to the Guernsey Music Centre from the Sure Community Foundation. The foundation’s gift covers the cost of four new musical instruments for use by island youngsters.
"Guernsey is extremely lucky to have so many very talented young musicians and a fantastic music service that is able to support them. The Sure Community Foundation is thrilled to be able to help these young people both in terms of fulfilling their musical potential as well as growing their confidence. Helping to create life skills for our young islanders is the very reason the Sure Community Foundation was created and we are very proud to be able to help," said Steve Ozanne, of the Sure Community Foundation.
Bob Beebe, Chairman of the Friends of the Guernsey Music Centre, said new students starting in January were looking forward to playing their new instruments. The youngsters will try out their new instruments at an open morning at The Grammar School next month, which will be attended by around 2,500 people.
"Donations like this simply help make the Guernsey Music Centre work. Without kind donations, new instruments and overseas courses simply wouldn't happen. We buy instruments carefully throughout the year depending on how our fundraising initiatives are doing. The Sure Community Foundation is particularly helpful in these difficult economic times and we are very grateful," said Mr Beebe.
"Young musicians learn about making music through the Schools Music Service, but importantly they also learn many other skills that will set them up for adult life – teamwork, punctuality, leadership, being a team member and how to encourage younger members along. All in all, it's a win-win. Musical skills can be taken all over the world and many students have gone on to become professional musicians. Others continue with music as a passtime throughout their lives, making and building many friendships."
The Guernsey Music Centre open day takes place at the Grammar School on Saturday 13 December. Everyone is welcome.
