WHAT DO YOU SEE OUTSIDE
THE WINDOW AT WORK?
Join our air traffic control operations teamLooking out the window at work is often frowned upon. Yet, for
our air traffic control operations team here at the airport, it’s an essential
part of the working day. Our air traffic co-ordinators and controllers work
closely together as they manage the airspace above and beyond Jersey and aircraft
take-off and landings at the airport. And
running those operations safely and efficiently involves a lot of behind-the-scenes
planning and organisation as well as in-the-moment actions. Not everyone is suited to the demands of being an air
traffic co-ordinator. However, if you are then, as the saying goes, the sky’s
the limit! Varied, challenging and
interesting on the one hand and immensely procedural and regulated on the
other, every shift and every changeover between our control tower and radar
office makes every day different. And, because the airport is open from early
morning until late in the evening, 365 days a year, you’ll be involved in our rotating
shift system. There’s a lot to learn and almost all your training and
validation will be on-the-job so you can build up your knowledge and expertise in
a supportive and encouraging team environment. Everyone’s competence is
assessed annually, so you’ll always need to keep up-to-date with new
developments and ensure your skills stay razor sharp. There will also be
occasional short courses in the UK, initially training for weather observation
and interpretation as this is a crucial responsibility especially when the
weather is inclement and changeable. As you might imagine, the electronic
systems we use for monitoring, interpreting and sharing flight path data, along
with weather information, are quite complex. Yet, with practice, they quickly become
second nature. And the extensive liaison you’ll have with colleagues and
operational partners across all airport departments, pilots, air traffic
control in other jurisdictions, and the emergency services means you must communicate
absolutely clearly, succinctly and calmly. While certain situations aren’t
debatable, work [like life] is easier and things run a lot smoother when we
engage openly, considerately and persuasively.
Given the nature of the role, we’re open minded about where
you’ve worked before as many of the qualities to be successful here are very
transferable. A lot of the processes and checklists are laid down categorically
and you’ll need to follow those methodically and accurately. Rational and
composed, you’ll also be alert to what’s happening, think clearly and act promptly.
We have great ambitions for our business and want our
employees to be just as ambitious with their careers. Typically, it takes at
least a couple of years before you’re fully competent in a co-ordinator role. While
we’re keen to support your progression towards an air traffic controller role, we
can’t make promises as that obviously depends on capability as well as
opportunity. To find out more and talk informally about this opportunity,
please give the ATC Supervisor a call on 01534 46135 during office hours or
apply by emailing your c.v and covering letter to recruitment@ports.je
