£1k fines for Portelet partygoers

Friday 17 July 2020

Police have threatened fines of up to £1,000 for people found partying overnight at Portelet Common after the area had to be closed off due to 'antisocial behaviour'.

Officers announced the closure of the area between the hours of 21:00 and 05:00 yesterday, following a spate of littering (including broken glass) and vandalism, as well as disturbance to residents.

Explaining the move on social media, they added that there were also safety concerns, as "Emergency Services wouldn't be able to reach some of the areas being used for parties and gatherings if an incident occurred."

The Force is now warning that anyone found hanging around the Common in the early hours from now on risks a fine of up to £1,000.

"We don’t want to stop people having fun, but we have to address these issues because we want to keep everyone safe," they said.
