World's first stamp to be shown in Jersey

Sunday 26 March 2017

A selection worth over £1million of rare coins and stamps, including the Penny Black - the world's first stamp - will be shown in Jersey as part of a luxury asset event next week.

An error stamp - with the only other known example owned by the Queen and catalogued at £135,000 - will also be shown as part of the exhibition held by Stanley Gibbons, a rare stamp and prestige collectibles merchant.

The exhibition will also include a block of 2d Blues stamps priced at almost £1 million, the largest gold coin ever struck in England, the Charles I 'Triple Unite’, a coin from Cromwell's 'Commonwealth,' and an Alexander the Great coin from 330BC. Stanley Gibbons will also bring a Chinese rarity that almost had its designer executed.

Keith Heddle, Managing Director at Stanley Gibbons Investment, will tell guests the full story of these rare collectibles during the evening.

Mr Heddle, said: “We will be bringing over some of the rarest stamps and coins in the world. Most people will have heard of the Penny Black, the world’s first stamp, and may have even seen an example before; but we will be bringing over one of the finest examples of its kind to help show people what makes a particular stamp like this so rare, and so valuable. Heritage and long-term value are increasingly a big attraction of stamps; some sophisticated investors consider them not just beautiful objects to collect, but potentially assets that could be an attractive investment in every sense of the word."
