25 new jobs as Superdrug opens next month

Wednesday 24 July 2019

Beauty store and pharmacy chain Superdrug is to open next month, creating 25 jobs, it has been confirmed.

The store’s launch at Mothercare’s former 7,000sqft King Street premises on 15 August marks the first time the empty shop will be filled in over a year.

It also marks the UK retailer’s first foray into the Channel Islands.

Superdrug, which has 800 stores across the UK, first put in a planning application in January

The application was subsequently approved, and the chain store took on their lease on 8 July.

Ian Strang, Managing Partner of Voisin Law, which advised landlord Vixen Holdings in the process, commented: “It is good news for St. Helier that another large retailer wishes to set up in the island, which will provide more choice to local consumers.”

Carey Olsen, which advised Superdrug on the securing of the appropriate business licences and its lease, this morning confirmed that Superdrug would open on 15 August and that 25 jobs would be created.

Chris Philpott, Partner and leader of the firm’s property team, said: “Superdrug is one of the most recognisable names on the UK high street and its arrival in Jersey with the opening of its first store on King Street is tremendous news for the local retail sector."

Superdrug’s opening follows a series of improvements to the wider Sand Street and Charing Cross area, which has involved the pedestrianisation of large sections of road and the creation of a new gallery and coffee shop on Pitt Street.
