41-year-old denies charge of bigamy

Saturday 11 June 2022

A 41-year-old man has denied committing bigamy by marrying a woman in St. Helier when he was already married to someone in Kenya.

Douglas Ndenga Akhonya pleaded not guilty to a charge of bigamy and another of providing false information by telling the authorities in Jersey that he was single.

He is accused of marrying someone in the office of the Superintendent Register in August 2015 while he was still legally contracted to a woman he married in Nairobi in March 2008.

Appearing in the Royal Court on Friday, Mr Akhonya’s pleas were not accepted by the Crown. A three-day trial has been set for 12 December, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for 7 July.

Mr Akhonya was remanded on conditional bail.
