30,000 slates later... £650k New North Quay roof renovation is finished

Saturday 31 March 2018

A £650k project to replace the roofs of four historic warehouse buildings along St. Helier’s New North Quay, which houses the Maritime Museum, Tapestry Gallery and Marine Leisure Centre, has just been completed, weeks ahead of schedule.

The five-month project, funded by Ports of Jersey, saw 30,000 new slates batten and felt together to replace the old ones. The new roof should now last for at least a quarter of a century.

The project also included repairs to the existing guttering and timber roof members.

During the replacement programme, four skylights were installed in the roof area above the Maritime Museum and Tapestry Gallery to improve natural light entering the building. Masonry repairs to cracked joinery in parts of the historic building were also undertaken by a specialist local team.

The works programme, which was funded by Ports of Jersey, was carried out by Jersey-based project managers and contractors, including W Horn and Jubilee Scaffolding alongside V&V Ltd for the masonry repairs. Contractors worked in accordance with Historic Building guidelines, using companies which had previously worked on heritage listed buildings and with Jersey Heritage.

Other than general maintenance and barring any major incident, the new roof is not expected to require further major work for at least 25 years.
