£720k works planned for Fishermen’s Pontoons

Saturday 17 February 2018

A major works programme to enhance the 25-year-old commercial fisherman’s pontoons in St Helier Harbour, with an overall budget of £720k funded by Ports of Jersey, is due to start later this month.

The two-month project will involve replacing the existing pontoons and equipment across two key areas used by the Island’s fishing fleet: La Collette berthing pontoons opposite La Collette Yacht Basin, and the London berth landing pontoon on the eastern side of Victoria Pier.

The existing pontoon equipment is more than 25 years old and regular engineering inspections have stated that it will soon not be serviceable anymore.

Ports of Jersey say the revised design will see an increase in the overall number of berths available, rising from around 45 berths to approximately 60 berths. Other enhancements will include increased pontoon widths and loading capabilities, as well as improved pontoon services, including access to power and water.

An overall budget of £720k funded by Ports of Jersey Ltd, has been allocated to the project, which, according to Abby Farahmand, Harbour Operations Manager for Ports of Jersey, will be of major benefit to the Island’s fishing industry. He says: “These major improvement works will provide a purposely designed and built facility that will service both today’s and our future fishing fleet. Throughout the project planning process we have worked closely alongside the Jersey Fisherman’s Association who have played an important role in ensuring the new development will meet the on-going requirements of the Island’s fishing industry."

The works programme is due to be completed by the end of April 2018 and will not affect the annual Barclays Jersey Boat Show, scheduled for early May.
