£9k stolen from bookies during fight ‘involving knife’

Monday 11 March 2019

Two men have been arrested after £9,000 was stolen from a bookmakers in town yesterday during a fight alleged to have involved a knife.

One of the men was arrested, while Police launched an appeal to islanders to help search for the other this morning. He was eventually found and arrested.

They are now investigating the altercation and theft, which involved three men in total and took place in Joe Jennings Bookmakers on Cheapside, St. Helier around 13:05 on Sunday.

The trio – all of whom were described as being in their “late 30s” – were fighting, when one of the men chased another into the bookmakers while wielding a knife.

In what was believed to be an “opportunist theft” rather than a “planned robbery”, around £9,000 was stolen from the premises.

No one was hurt, but witnesses were left “shocked and fearful”.

A 36-year-old man was subsequently arrested, but later released on bail, while a 39-year-old was arrested this afternoon.

Police are now urging islanders with more information about the “serious disturbance” to call 612612 or make an anonymous report using Crimestoppers’ online form.
