The 7 Overseas (Island of Jersey) Squadron is holding an open morning tomorrow from 10:30 to 12:30 at Lord Sandhurst Hall, and is inviting boys and girls aged 12 to 16 to join in to learn more about the activities of the Air Training Corps.
The Air Training Corps is a uniformed youth organisation for boys and girls between the ages of 12 (and in Year 8) and 20.
Leighton Jenkins, Training Officer, said: "We are a vibrant organisation with over 80 young people taking part in a range of exciting practical activities, from adventure training to shooting and from learning about first aid to leadership.
"We recruit from across the Islands Secondary schools, so this is an excellent opportunity to meet new friends or try new challenges with existing friends. We have a strong involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh Award and recently six of our cadets achieved the Gold Award."
Regular activities for the Air Training Corps include canoeing, climbing, abseiling, rifle First Aid and shooting. Air cadets also learn leadership and teamwork skills. There are also opportunities to fly in Royal Air Force Aircrafts. Cadets from last year's Squadron last flew in a Chinook Helicopter. They also flew solo in a light aircraft.
The cadets also go on summer camps, as well as adventure training and gliding in the UK.
The cadets meet on Friday nights between 19:15 and 21:30 and Sunday morning between 10:00 and 12:30. They also have a number of voluntary evenings during the week.
