Ain't no mountain high enough for Autism Jersey

Sunday 29 January 2017

Long uphill daytime treks and nights spent sleeping at 3,200 above sea level, supported only by the most basic refuge facilities - and that's just the preparation.

It’s a gruelling journey indeed, but one that a group of 20 volunteers will take on this September – all in aid of Autism Jersey.

Following their training, they’ll take to Morroco’s High Atlas Mountains accompanied by organisation Charity Challenge in order to embark on a 4,167-metre climb.

To enter, all applicants need do is raise a minimum of £1,250 each – no vaccinations, altitude training or other prior experience needed – and to be keen to push themselves to the limit.

Their efforts won’t go unrewarded, however. Those who make it will be treated to stunning views, and a day in the bustling heart of Marrakech later on.

Dr Helen Miles, the vice-chair of Autism Jersey who is joining the trek with her husband Richard, commented: “Like the Kilimanjaro Trek in 2014, this trek will be a real adventure – an opportunity to challenge yourself to something a little different to raise money for an important cause – a purpose-built centre that will improve services for people with autism in Jersey.”

Shane Hollywood, Managing Director of supporting company Ocorian, said that the business was, “…very proud to be supporting the Autism Jersey trek in 2017.”

“Whilst advancements in diagnosis and management continue to develop, autism remains a complex condition. The team undertaking the trek across the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco will certainly face a number of challenges but we have every faith that they will be successful and raise important money for this worthwhile cause,” he added.

Those who are interested in joining the trek must be available from 13 - 18 September this year. Anyone interested is asked to contact Helen Miles at  [email protected] .
