Report on impact of Alderney Occupation set to be published

Thursday 09 May 2024

A report seeking to establish exactly what happened in Alderney during the Second World War, and how many people died in the island during its Occupation, is likely to be published before the end of this month.

Historian, Dr Gilly Carr posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Lord Pickles Alderney Expert Review is "finished".

The renowned historian has worked with others to try and confirm the number of deaths at the island's labour camps – with some people believing it is far higher than the approximately 600 some estimates put it at.

Although she was removed from her role as the Channel Islands representative for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), she has been closely involved in the UK-led inquiry.

Commissioned by Lord Eric Pickles, the report at the centre of the Alderney Expert Review is expected to be published in London on 22 May.

Lord Pickles is the UK Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust Issues.

He appointed Professor Anthony Glees as his personal advisor on the Alderney Expert Review into "the numbers of slave labourers and prisoners murdered by the Nazis on Alderney".

Professor Glees said the pending review is "a substantial report which pulls no punches and shines a bright light on what was the darkest period in modern times".

"It is centred on the suffering at the hands of the Nazis of so many peoples – all on British soil," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

"Well done, Dr Carr!"
