There might be protests... but Jersey will still sing!

Tuesday 04 July 2023

A music festival due to feature more than 700 children from 15 schools across the island will still be going ahead despite coinciding with this week's teachers' strikes, organisers have confirmed.

Organised by charity 'Music in Action', 'Jersey Sings! Across the Bay' will see 45 acts perform across seven St. Aubin's Bay performance areas spread out from Jardins de la Mer all the way to the Look Out Café at First Tower between 12:00 until 21:00 on Wednesday.

As well as children from local schools, there'll also be performances from local acts ranging from DJ Stefan Rousseau to poet Traci O'Dea, as well as covers of Elton John songs.

Juliette de Guelle from sponsor Zedra said it promises "to be an uplifting and vibrant day" in which islanders of all ages will be able to "find enjoyment".

As a result of the festival now being due to coincide with schools closing as many teachers strike over a dispute with Government over pay, Music in Action has partnered with the Jersey Academy of Music to offer free workshop sessions for any child who may wish to attend.

Parents can drop their child off at Jardins de la Mer for 11:50 for free choir workshops between 12:00 and 13:30, followed by a performance until 14:00.

Alternatively, parents can sign up children for a whole day of music by emailing info@jerseyacademyofmusic.co.uk with a charge of £55.

Music in Action Chair James Mews commented: “'Jersey Sings! Across the Bay is a huge event. We are so delighted to find a way to offer every child the chance to take part in this event... Don’t forget that the evening show from 15:00 to 21:00 with many of Jersey’s favourite bands will also be terrific!”
