Just 7% of Islanders are paying almost half of the Income Tax in Jersey.

The top 7% of top-earning Islanders – 4,535 people - earning over £100,000 per year are paying £174 million per year, which is roughly 47% of the total paid.

The figures – which relate to the 2012 tax year – were released in response to a Freedom of Information Request.

And the request also revealed that the very highest earners in the Island – the 59 Islanders who took home more than £1 million over the course of the year – and earned almost £109 million between them, paid more than £20 million in tax.

Three-quarters of taxpayers earned less than £50,000 and paid, on average, £1,944 each.
