It's not a diplomatic issue to rival with the Ukraine crisis or peace in the Middle East, but the Romanian Ambassador is heading to Jersey today to solve a problem...
There are around 1,000 Romanians who live in Jersey but who aren't allowed to drive on the Island’s roads without retaking their test. But Romania's Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Dr Ion Jinga, will be signing an agreement tomorrow morning so that driving licences from Romania and Jersey will be valid on either country's roads.
It’s the first time a Romanian Ambassador has visited the Island and will be meeting some of the Romanians living in the Island at an event at the Town Hall.
Dr Jinga will also meet Chief Minister Ian Gorst, External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache, and Treasury Minister Philip Ozouf.
And when he’s not talking money at Jersey Finance Limited and the Jersey Financial Services Commission, the Ambassador will get to see the Island’s famous coin hoard on show at Jersey Museum and visit Jersey War Tunnels.
Senator Gorst said: “There are around 1,000 Romanians living in Jersey and I trust that the agreement the Ambassador has come here to sign will be of benefit to those Islanders. I look forward to the Ambassador’s visit and I hope that, as well as engaging with our local Romanian community, he will also have the opportunity to discover more about the Island’s culture and the high standards of regulation and services of our financial services industry.”
The Ambassador is staying with the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl at Government House, and will be going to a dinner hosted by the Deputy Bailiff, William Bailhache.
