The Animals' Shelter has launched an emergency appeal for donations after it was forced to cancel its fundraising activities during a period of "extra strain".
While it is currently closed to the public, the JSPCA is calling upon islanders’ generosity for financial donations and items on their wishlist as they continue to care for animals.
The shelter - which was just getting back on its feet after a period of significant financial difficulty - has had to stop face-to-face fundraising activities and cannot currently take donations, but there are other ways for islanders to help.
While islanders cannot currently visit the site, unless they have appointments, are buying food from the shelter or for emergencies, the 24-hour ambulance service continues with on-site vets and animal care teams doing “everything we can to rescue, rehabilitate and care for the wildlife and animals in need”.
“We are already experiencing extra strain at the Animals' Shelter and with the uncertain situation progressing, we are expecting to lose many of our vital donations,” the team wrote on 19 March on their Facebook page.
“We are having to stop our face to face fundraising events, as are the organisations that were due to host fundraising events on our behalf. Major island events are cancelled, meaning our awareness and fundraising platforms are disappearing.”
As the animal shelter receives no state funding and therefore solely rely on the generosity islanders to fund its activities. The team therefore launched a Coronavirus Emergency Appeal, which has so far raised over £1,500.

“Please donate because every pound makes a difference,” the team wrote on the fundraising page.
“We have lots of animals and wildlife in our care and the minimum cost per week varies per animals and even with small animals it can be quite surprising the amount,” they added.
With six guinea pigs currently in their care, the team said the total amounted to £688 a month, while a ferret costs them £210 a month to look after.

Due to the lockdown, the JSPCA is also unable to accept physical donations such as animal bedding, toys and food.
However, islanders wishing to help can purchase items on the JSPCA’s Amazon wishlist.
Requested items include cat and ferret food, chew toys for the guinea pigs, aquarium thermometers and bird feeders, among others.
