Another coin bites the dust

Jersey might be known for its quirky pound notes, but now it’s saying goodbye to its unique coins to coincide with the UK’s tender change later this year.

The UK will be introducing a new hexagonal pound coin on 28th March this year.

But Jersey won’t be following suit and making its own pound, as it had done previously.

For those thinking it doesn’t make penny sense, it’s all down to counterfeiting.

The hexagonal coin is set to be the “most secure in the world” according to the Royal Mint, as it will be far harder to forge.

Jersey’s £1 note won’t be affected, however, and will remain as legal tender.

With one fewer Jersey coin in circulation, the move will partially help put a stop to coin confusion on the mainland, which was highlighted earlier this month when a Blackpool mum was refused a bus ticket for using Island coins.

Any Islanders in possession of Jersey £1 coins will have until 15th October 2017 to bank or exchange their coins.
