Delve into more old records

Old records dating back a hundred years are being opened up to the public for the first time.

You can now find out more about the lead up to the Great War, Royal Visits to the Island and what happened to criminals in the 19th and early 20th century.

More than 200 new records have been opened up at Jersey Archive including the Jersey Prison Transportation Register and the Bailiff’s Correspondence from the start of the First World War.

Archives and Collections Director Linda Romeril said: “Each year Jersey Heritage opens more documents for people to come and view at the Archive. Whilst many of our documents are open to public access from the moment they arrive at the Archive, some files with sensitive personal data are closed for a certain period of time to protect individuals privacy.

“The files that have been opened in 2015 allow us to discover more about the build up to and outbreak of the Great War and the transportation and deportation of criminals from the Island in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. There are many more stories to discover in all the files that have been opened to the public this year and we look forward to members of the public coming to use the material for their research."
