A simple point to destressing yourself...

A new study by the British Acupuncture Council suggests we’re a lot more stressed than ten years ago and modern life is breeding a new generation of burnt out Brits turning to junk food and booze to cope with the pressure.

The study of 5,000 adults found that a third comfort eat, a quarter turn to drink and one in five say they put on weight but most say they are too busy to do anything to help them de-stress.

Local acupuncturist Lorna Jackson says stress has become a massive problem and she’s seeing a lot more “tired but wired patients”. She is one of a group of local acupuncturists hoping to get the point of their ancient Chinese medicine across during this week’s Acupuncture Awareness Week.

She said: "Stress can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle but reaching for your favourite foods or treating yourself to that bottle of wine after a hectic day may make you feel better in the short term but it won't tackle the root cause of the problem.

“Traditional acupuncture is an effective, evidence based therapy that can be a positive step for anyone wanting to get their stress levels back under control."

It is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today with 2.3 million treatments carried out each year. The treatment involves a lot of  needles but it's painless and helps the body trigger a healing response and restore balance.

Lorna says acupuncture helps release our “happy hormones” and calms our nervous system down. She says after having been constantly on the go, her patients leave feeling nice and relaxed.

Lorna said: "Although the research shows 1 in 10 of us think stress isn't serious enough to seek help, it's common to feel exhausted, overwhelmed and even depressed so finding support is vital. A course of traditional acupuncture helps to target the root cause of the problem as treatment is unique for each individual.

Typically the cause could be a deficiency in the body exacerbated by overwork, working long hours, burning the candle at both ends or a lack of proper rest and nourishing food. Together with a specific treatment plan which addresses diet, exercise and lifestyle, many of my patients find traditional acupuncture to be a wonderfully relaxing experience.”

This week Lorna and her fellow acupuncturists are offering free telephone consultations and you can get hold of them on the numbers below:
