Are your girls ready for Friday night football?

Wednesday 12 August 2015

After the gold medal success of Jersey’s NatWest Island Games womens’ football team, the Jersey Football Association is hoping to find the next crop of star footballers with a series of free coaching nights.

The first of the events takes place this week, with the new JFA Community Coach Daniel Seviour running the event from 5.15 pm at Springfield Stadium for girls in school years one to six (aged from five to 11).

Apart from unearthing the next Steph Houghton, Fran Kirby or Karen Bardsley, the JFA is also trying to drum up support for the upcoming matches for the women’s team against Godalming Town FC on Friday 21 August, and against USSM on Sunday 30 August.

They say that any young girl in primary school of any ability level is very welcome to come down on Friday – the session will include fun matches, games and penalty shooutouts.

In a statement, the JFA said: “On the evening any young girls that come to join in will have a chance to meet players from the Jersey NatWest Island Games Gold winning women’s team.

“Meeting the Jersey Women Gold medalists gives any young girls interested in football a chance to meet the their local heroes and learn about the opportunities that there are here in Jersey for women’s football such as, the girls Player Development Centre run by the Jersey FA.

“We will also look to create links with all local clubs and if any girls would like to join in with a local club we will support them in the process.”
