Armed stand-off with murder suspect

Tuesday 08 April 2014

Police were involved in a tense 40-minute stand-off with an armed murder suspect at La Mare slip before he gave himself up, they have revealed.

Armed police were deployed in the early hours of Sunday morning to the area, just a few hours after they had apprehended two other suspects in town. All three are being held on suspicion of the murder of Colin Chevalier (46) who was found dead with “extensive injuries” in his Duhamel Place flat on Saturday evening.

Two weapons were found at the scene, but officers are not saying what they were.

Although the police have been cautious about revealing too much about the investigation at an early stage, they have now confirmed that the 35-year-old man arrested in St Clement was in a stand-off with armed officers and negotiators before giving himself up.

The man, who was armed with a knife, talked to two specially trained negotiators for up to 40 minutes before surrendering. Armed officers had been deployed to the area to safeguard the public, the police negotiators and the suspect.

After being arrested he was taken to hospital – not because he had been injured in the arrest, but because he had been in the water and police wanted to make sure he was given a proper medical check.

Police say that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the crime, but have urged anyone who might know anything about it to come forward. They have now found the dark coloured VW Polo that had been parked in Duhamel Place which has now been taken to the police station to be searched.

Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull said that the deceased and the three people arrested were all known to each other, and that the police do not think anyone else was involved in the incident.

Investigators say that anyone with any information should contact the Major Incident Room on 612923 or call Crimestoppers Anonymously on 0800 555111.
